DBH is proud to announce our Annual Black History Month Celebration Event:

Know the Signs Series A Panel Discussion On The Bipolar Disorder Within African Communities

Fri., Feb 17 at 4-7pm.
San Bernardino Unified School District PDC Professional Development Center (PDC) Building
4030 Georgia Blvd, San Bernardino, CA  92407

The purpose of this celebration is to further our understanding of the African American culture through education and collaboration, and to promote mental health awareness. This is an opportunity to also remember and recognize the many achievements and contributions of African Americans to our nation.

The African American Awareness (AAA) Subcommittee of the Cultural Competence Advisory Subcommittee has joined with non-profit partners The Love Program, Young Visionaries, Pacific Clinics, Behavioral Health Ministries Pilot Project and the San Bernardino Unified School District to address the impact Bipolar Disorder has on the African American/Black community in San Bernardino County.

Event highlights include an overview of the relationship with Bipolar Disorder and the African American/ Black community by Myesha Dunn MFT, a welcome from California State Representative for district 45 Assembly Member James Ramos, and a multi-disciplinary panel to discuss signs, symptoms and resources for Bipolar Disorder in San Bernardino County. Food, childcare and opportunity drawings will also be available for all participants.

The objectives of this event include the following:
• Understand the signs and symptoms of Bipolar Disorder.
• Increase self-awareness on the available local resources for Bipolar Disorder.
• Identify cultural challenges and stigma within the African American Black community on Bipolar Disorder.
• Discuss the importance of identifying traumatic events for children and youth that may have challenges participating in the school system.

DBH would also like to recognize San Bernardino County Resolution that observes the 2nd week of February as African American Mental Health Awareness Week.

Cultural Competency: This course 2.5 of the DBH Cultural Competency training requirement.

Seats are limited.
To register, contact cultural_competency@dbh.sbcounty.gov.

In-person sessions will follow all San Bernardino County current health and safety requirements.
